Review
Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Republic Under Siege #4 is the endcap for the second act of the larger story following the Battle of Endor.
Like most Star Wars stories, Republic Under Siege finds the former Rebels attempting to establish a new universal government while dealing with the remaining factions of the Imperial forces that are scattered and led by those with their own visions and agendas in the absence of Palpatine. This and the other issues are both character and story-driven narratives that move the larger story towards the ultimate conclusion and build characters that previously have only been footnotes in other Star Wars stories.
This chapter also saw the return of a fan-favorite character, Doctor Aphra, and gives the first look at Gallius Rax, the Emperor’s heir apparent, who has been manipulating both the remaining Imperial Forces and The New Republic to his and the Emperor’s post-humorous plans for the future of the Empire. Along with the aforementioned characters, Segura also brings back Valance, the former Imperial officer turned bounty hunter and cyborg who was one of the stars of the long-running Bounty Hunters series. Even with the large cast, the story between The Republic and the Imperials is well-balanced and keeps things interesting.
One possible continuity/art slip revolves around Leia and her pregnancy, In issue one of Republic Under Siege, Leia is drawn as not looking pregnant with Ben, but by issue 4 she is shown in full motherly stature. In the Aftermath trilogy, which runs parallel to this series Leia is in the middle of her pregnancy, however, issue 3 is the first instance that shows she is with child.
Final Thoughts
Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Republic Under Siege #4 is a solid conclusion to the second act of the larger story as Gallius Rax moves both Imperial and Republic pieces into position in his attempt to fulfill Palpatine's plan for the Empire in the event of his death. Adelhard has been set a wildcard in the larger scheme which should play well into the final chapter of this saga.
