Review
Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1 begins the next phase of Marvel’s next chapter into the Star Wars saga, taking readers back to the time period before the events of Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Guggenheim drops readers right into the action as the members of the Jedi Council along with some Knights, at the request of Chancellor Valorum, are attempting to quell a conflict in the Outer Rim.
Along with the immediate action, the opening dialogue is a humorous tete-a-tete between Mace Windu and Master Yoda about how the peacekeeping efforrt is going. After the dramatic opening, the scene shifts to the second aspect Jedi’s two pronged attempt, Qui-Gon Jinn and a newly installed Knight are attempting to broker peace to end the conflict.
After this attempt to broker peace fails, Jinn is attacked by a would-be assassin, the Jedi Council devises a plan to bring both sides to the table to talk an end to the conflict, and the crux of this first story arc is laid out through a young padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. Guggenheim does a good job of balancing and blending this components into a single cohesive foundation for the story to be told. Guggenheim also seamlessly integrates established Jedi and new characters.
Guggenheim also captures the speech styles of the Jedi Masters well for the most part, with a few feeling a bit off in spots. The art and colorwork work well with the story being told, with characters being rendered nicely and on spec.

Final Thoughts
Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1 is a great beginning to the Marvel Comics adventures set in the pre-prequel era of the Star Wars Universe, promising to deleve into the established characters as well as new ones created for the series.
Overall, it will be interesting to see how Marvel approaches this time in the larger Star Wars story as most tales told during this period come from the Dark Horse Comics imprint.
