Review
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2 begins Kylo’s walkabout to learn more about his grandfather Darth Vader, so it’s back to where it all began, Tatooine. Joining Kylo on the trip is Vanee, Vader’s faithful acolyte, who begins to impart his knowledge of Vader, albeit from a certain point of view. It is revealed that following Palpatine and Vader’s demise , Vanee was able to unlock the secrets to Vader’s past that the Emperor used to corrupt and shape Anakin.
On the life of Vader tour, Vanee tells Kylo how life on Tatooine shaped his grandfather as a boy, telling him things that Luke and / or Leia did not tell him as he grew up and before his turn to the Dark Side. Soule also gives some interesting insight into how Kylo views his painful upbringing, which was full of loving family and friends. Vanee reveals to Kylo that Watto wasn’t his grandfather’s only owner and that Gardulla The Hutt was also involved and currently based on Tatooine. Looking to kill the past, Kylo travels to Gardulla’s, only to find the Hutt prepared to handle Force users and taking Kylo prisoner with intentions of making him a slave.
This issue is well-crafted as it is evident that Vanee is somehow involved in manipulating Kylo for use of his own means under the guise of helping him learn about Vader.
Overall the art is solid, with a few of the action scenes being a bit awkward when drawn from various perspectives. The color work is on point and the continued use of the red/white combination for the flashback sequences gives it a feeling of connection to the same usage in the earlier Darth Vader series from Marvel.
Final Thoughts
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2 continues to build a deeper look at both Kylo Ren and Darth Vader while building the story bridging the gap between Episode 8 & 9, while building a mystery into Vanee's true intentions for sheparding the new Supreme Leader on his journey.
