Star Wars: Rogue One – Saw Gerrera #1

Recap
Ten years ago, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story introduced the group of unlikely heroes who stole the plans to the original Death Star and set the stage for the Rebellion’s greatest victory.
Announced in February, Marvel Comics will celebrate the anniversary of the beloved film by publishing five one-shots spotlighting its key characters, starting in May with Cassian Andor, who went on to headline the film’s Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Disney+ prequel series, Andor.

Returning to the grit and glory of a Rebellion on the brink of war, the all-new stories will be set just prior to the events of the film, revealing never-before-told backstories and adventures from this pivotal era.
After proving himself in the CLONE WARS, SAW GERRERA was a soldier for the cause of freedom and was willing to do anything to secure it — including leading a mission deep into IMPERIAL territory.
At stake: information that would provide a tactical advantage that could shift the balance of power in the REBELS’ favor! But is the price to be paid for that information too high?

Review
Star Wars: Rogue One – Saw Gerrera #1 features the one character from the movie who has seen the most exposure of all the characters, yet little is known about his exploits between his first appearance in The Clone Wars to Rogue One, aside from his cameo arc in Rebels and The Bad Batch.
In Rebel Rising, the novelization that explores Jyn’s past, mentions that Saw is always on some secret ops mission ( his mission in this issue takes place prior to the events of Rogue One). Bernardin doesn’t sugarcoat the lengths Saw will go to accomplish his mission and to retrieve information that he believes will be useful in bringing down the Empire, cementing his place as one of the architects of the Rebellion. Not only does this oneshot tie into the events surrounding the movie, as he gets Galen and the Erso’s off of Coruscant around the events of the novelization Catalyst which tells the story of Galen Erso and how he initially became involved in the Death Star project, but also hints at the tensions between him and Bail Organa that has begun to be explored in Star Wars: Mask Of Fear, the first installment of the Reign Of The Empire trilogy.
Guzman and Blee’s art and color work set the perfect tone for this dark story.
Final Thoughts
Star Wars: Rogue One – Saw Gerrera #1 is a much needed deeper look at Gerrera's operations and the lengths he will go to is resisting the Empire in the time between the Clone Wars and events of Andor and Rogue One
