Review
Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #1 is a two story issue with the first picking up right after the conclusion of the Battle of Endor and the second giving the backstory of the Moff Adelhard who will be the series antagonist.
The first installment, Last Resort, sets the stage as Segura talks about how one battle doesn’t end a war as a Rebel pilot on the fringe of the galaxy is dealing with Imperial remnants lead by Moff Adelhard.
Back on Endor, Leia confronts Vader’s pyre telling the remains of her father that she can’t forgive him as easily as Luke has, which might be the first occurrence in the canon storytelling ( this was explored in the Legends Heir To The Empire books by Timothy Zahn, if memory serves).
Segura also introduces the Acolytes of the Beyond, who have machinations of their own now that the Emperor has fallen.
The story cliffhanger finds the B-Wing pilot ending up on Endor and informing Luke and Leia that there is a new threat that looks to reestablish the Empire.
Kirk’s artwork is a noticeable departure from the artwork of the Star Wars and Darth Vader series that ended last month. The lack of crisp artwork and heavy lines and blurry looking shots take something away from the story and might take readers out of moments on panel.
This is a nice segway into the second part of the issue that gives the origin of Moff Adelhard.
This is a much needed backstory as it gives the backstory of Moff Adelhard who started as a trooper and worked his way up there ranks. Adelhard’s origin is bolstered by the mentions and cameos of Tarkin, Thrawn, and Darth Vader, establishing that he will be a thorn in the side of the heroes as they go about forming the New Republic.
Raffaele on art and Sinclare on colors is a smooth transition from the Darth Vader series as the art is more like that of the previous series than that in the first part of the issue.
What remains to be seen is if and how characters from the 2015 Star Wars: Aftermath trilogy will be worked into the story, as Imperial’s Gallius Rax and Admiral Rae Sloan where leading the Empire remnants in the series that culminated in the Batle of Jakku.

Final Thoughts
Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #1 continues the Star Wars saga after the battle of Endor introducing new characters that will lead to the Battle of Jakku, which sets the stage for The Force Awakens.
It will be interesting to see how Segura weaves the story into the already established canon told in Star Wars: Aftermath novel trilogy.
