Review
Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #2 continues to tell the events in the galaxy following the destruction of the second Death Star.
The issue begins with The Acolytes Of The Beyond, saying that Luke will be looking for an ancient Jedi artifact, and that they need to be ready to try and acquire it. This makes sense as one of these stashes exist on Jakku (revealed in Aftermath series).
Following a page recapping the Rebel struggle against the Empire and about how wars don’t just end once the leadership is removed, a key story point is addressed as Grand Admiral Rey Sloan is seen reporting to a figure in the shadows. The two discuss Moff Adelhard and how he is going of the rail and must be dealt with.
Next, Adelhard is shown interrogating Rebel pilots that his people shot down at the beginning of last issue. Here Segura shows just how unhinged Adelhard is becoming.
The issue also takes a look at the architects of the New Republic, Mon Mothma, Leia, and one of their operatives discussing how to deal with Adelhard, opting to send a recon team to scout the area. The team consists of characters who appeared in the previous Star Wars series, with the leader being Kes Dameron (Poe’s father). It is also here that Segura makes another subtle connection to the Aftermath novels by mentioning they are getting details about Adelhard from an information broker “The Operator.”
Continuing to show the fallout of the Empire’s pending demise, the scene shifts to Tatooine and Jabba’s Palace where Bib Fortuna has assumed control of Jabba’s empire as seen in The Book Of Boba Fett and the Return Of The Jedi Anthology, From A Certain Point Of View. The introduction of the Spice Runners of Kijimi adds another interesting layer to the story as they are looking to capitalize on the disarray of the Empire.
Finally, Luke is attacked by the Acolytes of the Beyond hoping to secure the Jedi relic, a compass, that has come into his possession. Luke handles the Sith Acolytes who warn him the Dark Side is growing.
The artwork by Kirk, in the book is much better and cleaner than last issue which is nice to see and will hopefully continue. Rosenberg’s colors also continue to jump off the page and bring the story to life.
