Review
After two issues of setting up the status quo following the events of Return Of The Jedi, Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #3, settles in and begins to find a steady rhythm of balancing the various story threads that have been setup. Kes Dameron and his team of Pathfinders find themselves surveying and gauging the remaining Empire forces led by Adelhard in the Anoat system, the New Republic continues to struggle on Chandrila, and the relationship between The Acolytes Of The Beyond and Adelhard is touched on.
Kes Dameron’s team is captured by Adelhard, subsequently rescued by Adelhard’s lieutenant, and face a mysterious new Inquisitor. Segura continues to develop Adelhard’s character and background revealing that he is a brilliant tactician, but also one who doubts the need for The Force to succeed. There is a nice exchange between Adelhard and The Acolytes of Beyond representative, Reyna, who says that Adelhard needs more than ships and weapons, but also The Force. like Palpatine and Vader. In a nice piece of dialogue, Segura has Adelhard ask if it is the same Force that caused the Emperor and Vader’s downfall.
The identity of the Inquisitor has yet to be revealed and Segura gives very few clues that might help figure it out, hopefully this will be a mystery that will be teased out over a few issues and give Luke a worthy foe to confront. Readers are also given a nice moment between Luke and Leia, as she continues to struggle with the burden of leadership in a post-Empire universe. The overall story continues to fit in nicely with the post-ROTJ continuity that has been established in novelizations such as The Princess And The Scoundrel.
For the most part Kirk and Morales’ art is consistent and seemless, although there are a few wonky perspective shots, most of which are panels that are wide shots and include multiple characters. The art helps pace the writing and Rosenbergs colors are top-notch as always.
Final Thoughts
Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku - Insurgency Rising #3 finds it's rhythm as the established story threads begin to take shape in the post-Return Of The Jedi universe as characters begin to be developed and new challenges for the Rebels present themselves. The series continues to stay true and expand the Star Wars canon in a interesting and consistent manner.
