Review
Issue #3 of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures-The Monster of Temple Peak takes no time to jump right back into the action that the last issue had left off. Former Jedi, Ty, and her new companion, Drewen, have finally approached the lair of the Gretalax. The issue jumps right into the danger and suspense that these two characters face.
I love the relationship between these two characters. Ty seems to care for Drewen but has little patience for them. Drewen has become a lovable character too, showing their innocence, and kindness. Drewen is like a less obnoxious Jar-Jar Binks that truly wants what’s best for others. That mixed with Ty’s independence makes a great pair.
What this issue perfects, as well as the series, is the pacing. Cavan Scott does does a great job taking his time to build up this adventure, while still being able to include flashbacks of Ty as a padawan, to really develop this character. The flashbacks so far tell a wonderful story of Ty trying to stay out of trouble with her peer-pressuring friend back when she was a padawan. Again, I love this. It shows underneath Ty’s hard shell, there is also some innocence to her. It leaves me wanting more of Ty’s backstory to see what made this padawan leave the Jedi to go on her own.
As Ty and Drewen enter the lair, things really start to heat up. As Ty fights the beast we get to see that Ty still had so much left to learn as a padawan. Her skills in the force are rusty, and display trouble within herself. This adds so much suspense to the adventure but also adds more to the character.
With all this said, Cavan Scott is doing a fantastic job with this series.
Rachel Scott does an amazing job with the art as well. She excels in showing motion within the panels, especially when Ty is fighting the monster. Every panel depicts intense, quick action, while still keeping that elegant Jedi flow within Ty. I also love the way Drewen is drawn. The way they run looks goofy and adds to their innocence.
As for the colors, it was solid. Keeping in mind that there’s lightsabers being drawn that create their own light, some of the scenes in the cave and flashbacks still seemed too bright. I feel the panels should have been darker and would have added more to the tone. However the color palettes were good choices. There were lots of cool tones within the cave to give it that cold, suspenseful feel.
Final Thoughts
So much has already happened in just three issues and there’s only a couple more left to go. It’s sad to know this is only a mini series, because I really hope to see Ty and Drewen again in other High Republic stories. The pacing in this story is perfect. So much happens without anything feeling rushed. This issue, and series as a whole, makes me hope for more comics written and drawn by Cavan and Rachel Scott together.
