Steeple #1: This is Who I’m Here to Help

Steeple is a series that was once described as Parks and Recreation meets Preacher, and honestly, there has never been a more accurate description of a book. It has all the humor and dark drama you could want, with a budding forbidden friendship to keep you interested.

A story surrounding a trainee priest moving to a small town to help those who are lost might feel a bit cliche, but Steeple accomplishes something uniquely original in its first issue. The story isn’t solely focused on telling a pro-Christian message or, for that matter, bashing any particular faith. Even the introduction of the Satanic Church is handled with a sense of humor. There is a dark presence in this small community, but it’s portrayed through a much lighter tone helping to stand apart on its own.

The artwork isn’t necessarily mind blowing, but I get the sense that it never set out to be. I don’t use the word quaint often when describing a book, but the visuals in Steeple #1 come across as just that. It’s a cute book that definitely knows how to have fun, but there are some more in-depth moments that show this series has a worthwhile direction.

With a few keen moments connecting to a younger audience (ex. see the “incel” zinger!), Steeple #1 shows that it knows what it wants to be and isn’t hindered by what anyone feels it should be. For that, this series seems poised to be an engaging and enjoyable series about light, darkness and the grey area that we all know just a little too well…

Do yourself a favor and pick up Steeple #1, it’s a FUN time!
