Recap

For those of us who have read comics, we are used to superheroes and supervillains getting their powers by a wide range of methods from genes evolving, to alien experiments, to being bitten by a radioactive spider or just being an alien. What if you were able to obtain powers no differently than seeing your local drug dealer? In this series by Boom! Studios that is exactly what these cops are dealing with.

Review

I am not too familiar with Mike Carey, but to be fair I am generally limited to my knowledge of the creative team until the past couple of years. This is a very unique look at how our world may look if everyday people were to able to get access to powers. Some used their powers for good, some for bad.

I liked that Carey used a superhero death within the first few pages. We all have seen the cops at the scene of a supervillain rampaging the big apple, then the superheroes show up to save the day. The way Carey presents it, what happens to the Cops/ The first responders before the heroes show up? A lot of them die or as we see Leo’s friend have his arm ripped off. As a first time reader of this series, I am really intrigued and I want to know more, but was it enough to make me pick up issue two?

The art went really well with the story. I believe the two complimented each other very well. I believe the idea behind the story is unique. We see the main Character’s side story with his family but not the main focus. There was a lot of information in issue one which was needed it set up a foundation to what appears to be a solid run, depending on which direction Carey takes us on.

The question is, is the story intriguing enough to pick up issue two? Yes! In fact, I had to force myself to write a review before reading issue two. There was a bit of a cliff hanger on the last page. I want to see where it’s going to go.

Final Thoughts

A fresh look on how the world could be if every day humans were able to access superhuman powers.  A strong story, an interesting cliff hanger at the end, the story leaves you clues on which direction it may go but leaves enough open to where you aren't sure the path they will end up on.
