SUNDAY CLASSICS: Bloodshot #1 (1993)

A true classic! Bloodshot #1 is everything that inspired the brand new live action film featuring Vin Diesel and then some. It’s a big budget intense action story that takes readers all around the globe for a first issue that is sure to excite. It’s great 90’s fun with a violent twist that quickly delves right into the heart of this characters enduring popularity.

Co-creator Kevin VanHook undoubtedly has a firm understanding of how to make this character work in the comics medium. The fast-paced rollercoaster that occurs in just the first issue is quite stunning. As readers are taken from one destination to the next, from an airport in Brittain to Osaka Japan, we follow Bloodshot on a quest of vengeance against Project Rising Spirit that proves the 90’s knew how to have fun in comics.

The visuals are instantly iconic and still stand the test of time today. The cover of Bloodshot #1 is one of the most immediately recognizable images in all of Valiant Comics even. While this version of Bloodshot will undergo some radical changes until we get to the modern interpretation, including a name change and update wardrobe, this is still the foundation for everything we love about him. Including being a total badass!

This is a classic not just for Valiant as they enter a remarkably impressive year in 2020, but also for comics in general. Valiant exploded into the industry and set up tons of awesome characters, and Bloodshot #1 is a great example of what they brought to the industry.
