Review
Superman #16 (written by Joshua Williamson with art and colors by Jamal Campbell) continues the Absolute Power DC summer event with a powerful team-up. Mercy is helping to save the powerless heroes from Waller’s attacks and using the Fortress of Solitude as a home base. When Zatanna is saved by Mercy, she tells Superman her plan to save the other heroes by using the magical realm. This is a perfect tie-in to the Absolute Power event with beautiful art, impeccable writing, and, of course, Zatanna!
This is an incredible issue, although I may be biased considering Superman and Zatanna are my two favorite DC characters. My bias aside, Joshua Williamson is treating readers to a thrilling collaboration between Superman and Zatanna, showcasing their unique abilities (or lack thereof in this event) and mutual respect as they face formidable challenges together in this new world. Williamson excels in characterizing Superman and Zatanna, capturing Superman’s unwavering sense of justice and Zatanna’s mystic prowess with authenticity and depth. The issue also maintains excellent pacing, balancing character-driven moments with thrilling action sequences that keep the reader engaged throughout. Lois Lane also gets an amazing reveal (which I won’t spoil) that perfectly captures her heroism, morality, and overall badassness. This may be my favorite issue in this series thus-far and has made me even more excited for the Absolute Power event. This issue is essential reading for anyone following the event as Superman #16 enriches the overarching narrative while providing pivotal moments that impact the storyline.
The art in this issue is nothing short of stunning, capturing the essence of Superman with vibrant colors and dynamic panels that evoke the hope and optimism he represents.
Jamal Campbell returns to Superman and is doing an amazing job at exemplifying the why DC has some of the best character designs in comics. This series has been producing some of my favorite panels of Clark Kent, the example in this issue being young Clark as a magician. Campbell brings Williamson’s fantastic story to life with bright colors, dynamic panel layouts, and detailed illustrations. Campbell’s work enhances the narrative flow and effectively captures the emotions and severity of the Absolute Power event. It’s just an overall great reading experience.
In conclusion, Superman #16 not only enhances the Absolute Power event but also stands as a testament to why Williamson remains an enduring icon in the comic book world. With stunning artwork, strong characterization, and a compelling narrative, this issue is a must-read for fans of the Man of Steel, Zatanna, and lovers of superhero storytelling alike.
Final Thoughts
Superman #16 is the perfect tie-in to the Absolute Power event, with impeccable story telling and an exciting team-up. This is a must read for anyone reading the summer’s biggest event.
