Review
The Superman ongoing series reached a monumental milestone with the release of issue #25. Superman #25 continues the Many Deaths of Doomsday saga, which follows Clark Kent Superman and Lois Lane Superwoman as they race against their own destiny. Mercy Graves has taken over Supercorp and awakened the evil X-El, a Lex Luthor clone with the powers of Superman. Is the super couple strong enough to defeat this evil Lex Luthor? And what devious goal is behind Mercy’s plan? Find out in this all-star issue of Superman by Joshua Williamson with art by the irreverent Dan Mora, Jamal Campbell, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira.
It’s so exciting to have another long run of Superman, and this arc has been really exciting. The introduction of Superwoman has been fantastic and seeing Lois Lane with her powers has been great. The inclusion of Superwoman is a fascinating way to show the different roles that Lois Lane plays in a Superman story. It proves that she is more than just the love interest and demonstrates how her power and humanity inspire Clark. I’m shocked with how long she has stayed around as Superwoman and have been pleased overall with how prominent of a character she has been in this series. This issue focuses heavily on the action, but Williamson still manages to weave a compelling tale. The way that Lex Luthor returns to evil is such a clever detail that shows the juxtaposition of Superman and Lex. Even when Lex thinks he is doing the right thing, it is not enough in Superman’s eyes. It’s a fascinating look into their character dynamic, and Williamson pulls it off incredibly.
This special issue has all of the great Superman artists contributing. Dan Mora, Jamal Campbell, Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira do an incredible job balancing their art styles to make one epic comic. The action in this issue is astounding, with dynamic fluid movements that pop off the page. The facial expressions on the characters are also expressive and human-like. This issue is beautiful and it’s perfect for such a special issue. This series has been running for almost two years now and I hope it continues to get the love it gets as it has been exceptional.
Final Thoughts
Superman #25 is a fantastic milestone issue full of gripping action, shocking twists, and incredible art. This is an all-star creative team, and it feels like they are not holding back their talents at all with this arc.
