Review
The year of Superman continues with a special one-shot with four stories from Eisner-nominated creators! Superman Red and Blue 2025 Special #1 is the Superman story of the year with over 40 pages of Superman action all in red and blue!
Priceless
This short story, written by Paul Dini with art by Mirka Andolfo and colors by Arif Prianto, follows the Man of Steel as he tries to rescue Supergirl and Krypto from an alien jail. After running wild in the strictest planet in the universe, Kyrus, Supergirl has racked up billions in fines. It’s up to Superman to bail her and Krypto out by obtaining a calid crystal. It’s a heartfelt story about the lengths we go for family, and it concludes with an honest and sweet message. Dini coming in from Gotham has been a big shift, and I think he executed this story well. The art in this story is more cartoon-like than I prefer, and Supergirl looks distinctly different from Superman, but overall, it works.
All the Time in the World
Written, illustrated, and lettered by Michael Walsh, this short story follows a regular, busy day in Superman’s life. It shows how a man with super speed will still feel like he is running out of time. It captures the heart of Superman and the sacrifices he makes to save the world. Walsh blew me away with this story, and his art is my favorite of this special. It’s great to see every corner of Metropolis in just. A couple of pages and the readers get to feel especially connected to Superman. This was my favorite story of the special, and Walsh did an exceptional job as a one-man team.
Out of the Ordinary
This short story, written by Dan Abnett with art by Caitlin Yarsky and colors by Alex Guimarães, follows a small-town reporter meeting Superman for the first time. When giant alien robots attack a small farming town, Superman sweeps in to save the day. A local reporter gets an exclusive interview with Superman and has a heart-to-heart with him about an ordinary life. I think Abnett perfectly captures the heart of Superman, and the understanding that Superman is Clark’s secret identity, not the other way around. The art in this story is impressive, and the blue and red coloring works well.
Red-Letter Days
Written by Rainbow Rowell with art by Cian Tormey and colors by Romulo Farjardo Jr., this story follows Superman and Lois Lane on their anniversary. Superman forgets their anniversary while he is off saving the world. But Lois isn’t bothered as she has the exclusive story of the year! It’s a fun story that shows their dynamic well and really highlights the Kent-Lane family. The art in this story is also mind-blowing! The use of red and blue in this story works so well and contrasts effectively in the story. It’s a beautiful story, both visually and in its storytelling.
