Superman: Son of Kal-El #10
Recap
Lex Luthor has Jon in the old proverbial hot seat, and he is busily stoking the fire. What use is Truth against so profligate a liar? Lois Lane is about to find out.
Review
There was so much to love about this issue that it will be difficult to cover it all. Lois beating a Fox-like fake news empire using nothing but her brains and a bit of painted rope was a definite highlight. Jon coming out to his mother (and her absolutely perfect response) was another.
It’s so nice to see a positive, healthy response to a child’s coming out in fiction. The fact that this was a rare portrayal is hideously shameful. Seeing something like this as a mini bisexual would have bolstered my confidence. I’m glad that it exists for the kids who are just now coming into their own, and I hope that when my son comes of age, this type of portrayal of a normal adolescent milestone is as tired and well explored as every heterosexual coming of age trope.
The mechanics of this plot (all those gleefully spinning cogs, all going at once) are wonderful. This story ticks along with precision and beautiful intent. And just when you think the stage has been fully set, another element springs into action. This is my way of saying that I can’t wait to see what Batman is up to but, you know, with minimal spoilers.
Tormey’s art was as clear and nuanced as ever. His panels perfectly direct the reader’s focus, drawing the eye to whatever is necessary to propel the plot, but without skimping on the background details that make revisiting each issue a pleasure. Federico Blee’s candy coded colors really make each panel pop, without ever descending into either incoherence or headache territory.
This book is, in every sense, a pleasure to read.
Final Thoughts
The battle between lies and The Truth reaches a fever pitch in this issue. Fantastic story and show-stopping art cement this as one of DC comics' best books.
