Recap

The team behind the critically acclaimed Ice Cream Man comic comes to DC to apply its singular storytelling style to none other than the Man of Steel! Four new Kryptonites have been discovered in deep space, and Superman needs to know just what, exactly, they do to him — lest the colorful rocks of his home planet fall into evil hands! With Batman at Superman's side, this DC Black Label Superman event explores the consequences of each never- before-seen variety of Kryptonite — all in the formal and boundary-pushing fashion that W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, and Chris O'Halloran are celebrated for!

Comic Watch Review: Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1

This colorful cruise through a cornucopia of curious new Kryptonites continues! After last issue's timey- wimey race against (or was it toward?) the clock, Superman (with Batman's help!) is left to deal with the sizable effects of cobalt Kryptonite.

Watch in awe as the Man of Steel grows, grows... and grows some more, bringing us the Kal-El kaiju comic of our collective dreams! What's happened to the fortress? Why is Supes-zilla so angry? And what on earth is Chemo doing here?

Review

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #2 drops the reader in the middle of the action as an enlarged, Kaiju-sized Man Of Steel battles Atom Smasher in the middle Metropolis due to the effects of the Cobalt Kryptonite. Not only does w. Maxwell Prince start off with an action sequence but a well placed bit of humor as Green Lantern (John Stewart) rescues some office workers, one of which is more upset that she has lost years of processed data, to which Green Lantern quips that it is always best to ‘Control-S’ frequently when working on important data.

The story then flips back to earlier at the Fortress of Solitude as Superman and Batman begin to test the next iteration of the samples the Colbolt Kryptonite. While a bit dialog heavy, the conversation between the growing Superman and Batman is a fun exchange, as for once  Batman’s take on the growing situation is a more practical one than Superman’s.

As the ginormous Man Of Steel tries to calm the people, Luthor seizes the opportunity to try and turn the public against him by hitting him with Red Kryptonite. As he has done in Ice Cream Man Prince takes the opportunity to have Superman comment on the state of the environment and how the people don’t deserve Metropolis since they have ruined it with carbon emissions.

There is plenty of humor also in the issue as Batman races to make a Kryptonite powerd cannon to reduce Superman back to normal.

The next issue is also set up in the final page as Superman literally drinks Chemo (released by Luthor) to prevent him from destroying Metropolis or harming the people with fallout, de-ages into Superboy as Shazam shows up to help out.

The creative team continues to have fun both in the storytelling and artwork providing a comicbook that can be enjoyed by both longtime Superman fans and casual readers.
