Recap

During the Secret Wars, Spidey was given a brand new suit that responded to his thoughts and could take any form that he needed it to. Even his normal street clothes!! But, there's also a weird darkness to these new threads, but nobody's quite figured out what it is, yet.

Review

Everybody has “their” comic characters. I don’t mean their favorites, I mean the versions of the character that they first fell in love with. From “campy” Batman & Robin to “Jailbird” Daredevil (I don’t think that’s really a thing, but I couldn’t come up with anything else to describe the Daredevil of right now) everyone fell in love with a particular character at a particular time and that’s how they remember the golden age of that character. Little Jimmy Hayes first fell in love with Spider-Man just before The Secret Wars started and he got his iconic black costume.

So needless to say, Symbiote Spider-Man is “my” Spider-Man and to see him back in action in this new series is great, but add a dose of author Peter David makes it off the charts!!! Peter David starts off this mini-series with a really great issue. First off, David stays true to the “era” of the black costume, he’s with Black Cat, but he’s conflicted because he knows she’s not the “settle down” type. Jonah isn’t a mayor or working for a website, he’s the publisher of the Daily Bugle. The story sees a number of villains that set the larger story into motion and boy, does David put the peddle to the metal with this story.

I can’t wait to see where this goes, and I think you’re gonna feel the same!

Artist Greg Land is a pro’s pro. With a laundry list of credits, the man has certainly put his time in. His work is pretty great in this issue, not hyperdetailed in any way, just straight-up rock-solid comic art that’s a lot of fun to look at and compliments the story a great deal. The designs that he creates for some characters are spot-on and very unique. Artistically, this issue is a home run.

Final Thoughts

For anyone that read Spidey in the '80s, check this out, you're gonna love it. For everyone else, check this out you're gonna love it. If you are one of those people that think "Marvel is stupid for going back to this well so often" well, there's a reason for that.....it's awesome! Highly recommend that this series goes on your subscription list.
