Review
Issue #111 continues to build on the ever-growing foundation that Sophie Campbell continues to take this magnificent series in. The book starts off with the turtles getting the dojo ready for the ensuing invasion from Old Hob’s lackeys. If we have learned anything about the turtles since #100 is that their resilience and ability to adapt and overcome should not be questioned. You will lose every single time. Dealing with these thugs is just one level of the storyline.
Sally who has ditched her old ways and has now become an ally wants to do what she can to help the dojo but Raph gently informs her that she cannot really do anything as their traps are more of ninja based influence. This unfortunately leads to Sally feeling left-out and hopeless to the cause. Earlier in the book, we see her walking around with a dejected look on her face which you cannot help but assume there is definitely something below the surface that will soon appear. Another truly heart-wrenching moment is when Mona calls her parents and wants to video chat with them so she can show them what she looks like. Unfortunately, it didn’t go well at all. Situations like this can be applied to so many real-life experiences and is just another example of how much heart, soul, and passion that Sophie Campbell puts into her writing. She continues to take the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to new plains and the fandom screams for more!
Knowing how Campbell has handled writing duties we can surely expect something of atomic proportions setting the series in another grand direction filled with emotion. Speaking of emotion, I would be doing this review an injustice if I didn’t talk about the remarkable job that Jodi Nishijima has done with the art. Jodi continues to bring her unique style to TMNT that fandom has come accustomed to over her tenure with the series be it covers or interiors. From exceptional facial expressions, great fights scenes, and environments combined with the awesome talent of Ronda Pattison’s colors, and Shan Lee’s outstanding lettering, this tag-team makes the art jump off the pages. As if there wasn’t already a lot going on in this issue, the ending which will affect cannon on the IDW series is one of the best jaw-dropping panels that we’ve seen. I won’t reveal it here as to not give away any spoilers but this ending is only another brick paving the way on the road to the Eisners.
Final Thoughts
There is a lot to unpack in this issue. From Mona, Sally, and then the spectacular ending, even after reading it a couple of times I’m still grinning from ear to ear. With every issue, I am still amazed at how this team continues to take the turtles to new avenues and keep it fresh and exciting issue after issue. Do yourself and favor and read this book!
