Review

In comics there are names that are connected with characters. Kirby and Thor. Brubaker and Captain America. Grant Morrison and Batman and now Campbell and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sophie Campbell’s run on the series is a modern master class on how to grow the characters and their world. We didn’t just get new uniforms and headquarters for the Turtles, but we got life-changing events that resonated with the readers. Does that mean the pre-Campbell era was an inferior product? Absolutely not! Campbell’s turtles became family. The characters, the stories, the tears, and the storytelling… we all became turtles.

With issue #150 it was fitting that we get an all-star cast for one last throwdown before the lights come up and it’s time to go home. Federici, Pe, Pattison, Duncan, and Lee… the gang’s all here. Having Donny take the lead in the final arc is fitting. I always considered him to be the leader of the pack, his temperament along with his love for his family is his strongest weapon. While that story is centered on the turtles, one can’t help to imagine that the final arc for this creative team is nothing more than a beautifully crafted thank you letter. The familiar tones of Pattison and Delgado, and Lee’s lettering (which continues to be some of the best on the shelves) are all here along with plenty of tidbits from the entire Campbell saga. As the story winds down, Sophie Campbell leaves us with a solid explanation of their history not to mention she, leaves interesting avenues for incoming scribes.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t goodbye. We’ll see the familiar names on future TMNT projects, and when we do we will be lifted away by great memories of this legendary era. It’s been a helluva run. Thank you.
