Recap

Brahm Revel’s hit origin mini-series is back! Jennika finds herself in the middle of a war of sorts among humans and mutants and how to coexist with each other. That is just the beginning as Ivan has shown up and so has huge monsters looking for a bad time. Does Ivan have something to do with it?

Review

She’s baaaack! Brahm Revel has given new life and attitude to Jennikta that is just as infectious as the book itself. Taking command over the book’s story, art, and letters, Brahm commands this new series just as a seasoned admiral on the sea! Coming out of the gates with not only a solid story but a message that is heartfelt, strong, and makes you sit back and think a little bit.

Jennika’s adventure picks up with a misunderstanding as she intervenes in an altercation between two citizens on Mutant Town. The end result of said altercation sets up the book nicely as it continues to drive the message of “looks can be deceiving” just as we see on an everyday basis in our day to day lives. One of the things that I really enjoyed with this first issue is that Brahm delivers a story and message without overdoing it and making it feel artificial.

Brahm does a remarkable job in presenting Jennika in a way that makes her strong, powerful, and a leader of the people with honesty and sincerity. Seeing this in action when she’s confronted by a towering mutated and pissed off hyena. Thinking quickly on her feet of not only on keeping it contained within Mutant Town but making sure its citizens are not in immediate danger. When going through flashbacks we learn how this beast got to where he is and how becoming a mutant wasn’t the only problem in his life. We are introduced to his human family and how he ended up traveling on a dead-end road of life.

As the story progresses Jennika finds out there is much more below the surface and living below that surface is Jennika’s old acquaintance Ivan whom we met in the last series when he was peddling his “cure”.  Well, could we be seeing the effects of this cure? Just how far is Ivan willing to go when it comes to supplying his cure? Perhaps the more important question is, how far is someone willing to go to transform back to their old self.

Final Thoughts

TMNT: Jennika II starts off just as magnificently as it ended. The amount of passion that is on display from Brahm Revel is beautiful reassurance that Jennika will join the likes of other strong comic book female characters in due time. This book is nothing short of fabulous!
