Review

Do you remember your Saturday morning cartoons? You’d sit on the living room floor as close to the tv as possible without your mom yelling at you. A big bowl of cereal in your hand, and for 4 hours, you just watched the cartoons you waited for all week. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aired in 1987, and IDW Publishing has launched this 4 issue series to give us a pang of nostalgia. And boy, did they deliver. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures #2 felt like I was watching it on my little Spongebob tv from when I was a kid. Every panel felt like a motion animated series.

This story opens up with Shredder coming up with a new plan to take over the world. And naturally, April is involved. An invention by a world-renowned professor will change the course of history and violence as we know it. So, of course, Shredder wants this invention. But fortunately, he has no idea what it does or even what it is. April is doing her interview with the Professor when Shredder intervenes and tries to steal the invention. Knowing that the Turtles won’t be far behind, he brought a secret weapon—a Rock Monster.

Rock monster, indeed- I love the pun. For Those About to Rock is a fun and light-hearted comic that Good and a little Rock Music will always triumph over Evil. Erik Burnham did a fantastic job with this story. I was just as enthralled in the book as I would’ve been in the television set back in the day. This book was well done. The new characters and the plot are fun and exciting. But where would any tv show or comic be without its artists?

The artists bring the story to life, precisely what Tim Patrick Lattie did. So we have our 80’s Turtles back! Even if only for a short while.
Understand, I don’t dislike the new look for the Ninja Turtles. It was just very different from the original in 1987. Then, they were bubbly looking and full of cheesy comic book catchphrases like COWABUNGA DUDE! Truly a nostalgic experience.

Final Thoughts

I had a gratifying experience with this book. Everything about it made me smile. Erik Burnham and Tim Patrick Lattie understood the assignment. I look forward to reading the next one. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures #3 Super Casey is sure to be a phenomenal "episode." Now, I will grab a bowl of cereal in my PJs and watch some old-school cartoons. See ya next time!
