REVIEW: Thanos #17 “The Worthy VS The Mad King” (Thanos Wins)

This is it! Thanos versus the Silver Surfer! Will the universe be avenged or will Thanos win?

THANOS #17
Writer: Donny Cates
Artist: Geoff Shaw
Colorist: Antonio Febela
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel Comics

What You Need to Know:
Thanos was brought to the future by his older self in order to do one thing. Help his future self with the final battle against the Silver Surfer. After the two Thanos’ and Ghost Rider defeat the Annihilation Wave. The Silver Surfer reveals he is worthy of Mjolnir and intends to finish off the Mad Titan King.

What You’ll Find Out:
The Silver Surfer fights off the two Thanos’ almost with ease in the beginning. Surfer has grown so powerful that even the Hulk is no match for him. Surfer even puts Ghost Rider down easily.

However, the Surfer’s dominance ends when the old king runs a sword through the worthy one. Both Thanos and his older self, beat Surfer to a pulp with the older Thanos finally killing him. With the final fight over, it seems Death is ready to reveal herself at last.

What Just Happened? From the start, there really should never have been any doubt, Thanos was going to win. With the arc ending next issue, it’ll be interesting to see what the payoff to this entertaining story will be. And while Cates delivers on his end by providing an intriguing story. It was all about the artist on this issue as the bloody throwdown did not disappoint. The barbarism of Thanos and the heroism of the Silver Surfer were drawn beautifully.

Rating: 8/10

Final Thoughts: Fortunately, Thanos Wins was not just a title to the story, but a fact. Nor did the fight between the Surfer and the two Thanos’ disappoint. It was gritty, gruesome and awesome. Now, what is the real payoff? What does Cates have in store for the conclusion to this bloody epic tale? Personally, I can’t wait to find out.
