The 7 Deadly Sins vol 1: A Fistful of Danger

I really liked this book by new to comics writer/ TKO Studios Publisher Tze Chun, there aren’t nearly enough Westerns these days I feel and this one had a slick Suicide Squad 1867 vibe I was really into. Alongside this dynamic the entire crew are pariahs in their time, a chinese man, a couple runaway slaves, a trans person in everything but name and a couple of deformed men, super interesting group, a true gathering of outcasts. It also adds a certain gravitas in the form of consequences that would otherwise be unlikely.

On this my third review for TKO Studios it did click in my head that all 3 TKO books I’ve read so far have been period pieces centering around various wars, with this book taking place just after the Civil War. The Fearsome Doctor Fang takes place just before World War 1 and Sara during World War 2. I just found it noteworthy.

The art by Artyom Trakhanov is excellent within the setting, which is perfect. I loved the look of the Native Comanche, which were one of the last holdouts in the west when the US Government started shipping Native Americans to reservations due to their warlike nature. I will say action scenes seem to get a little bit murky and it becomes hard to tell what’s happening at times.

The colors by Giulia Brusco make the scenery feel dusty and grimy and the characters really seem to pop in the scenery. I especially liked the contrasting tones of various flashbacks giving backstory to the characters.

The lettering by Jared k Fletcher really shines in the integration of sound effects into the background, which I have always loved. Especially in battle scenes where the din of gunfire is overpowering. Awesome.

The trade paperback is in an oversized format comparable to somewhere between a DC Absolute Edition and a standard (current age) single issue. Paper is non glossy but still nice, similar to what DC uses in their single issues but a little less shiny. The binding is tight and feels sturdy and the cover material has a high quality feel to it. This is a nice book, I can see why they sent out physical copies. I might have liked to see maybe a small covers gallery or any kind of material on their other books in the back, but other than that the book is physically top notch. I did appreciate a bios section in the back to help me get to know the creators I was unfamiliar with.
