Recap

Mary Jane Watson has landed an amazing role, playing a part crafted specifically for her in a big budget biopic on Mysterio. Except…the crew consists of super powered criminals and the director is not world known Cage Midnight but instead Mysterio himself.

Review

Amazing Mary Jane hits the ground running. Leah Williams wastes no time showing a firm grasp of MJ’s voice. When MJ discovers Mysterio and learns of his grand plan to tell his story via big budget film, she responds much how I would expect a woman who beat Chameleon up with a baseball bat; with annoyance. Mary Jane is able to coerce and convince Mysterio to flesh out her story further, from a two dimensional girlfriend to someone with her own motivations, growth, charm and character arc in a lovely meta conversation that I can imagine having been held in the Marvel editorial office about Mary Jane’s own character development.

The artwork by Carlos Gomez and colors by Carlos Lopez do a good job of matching the tone of the story. They provide a good backdrop of the tour Mysterio gives MJ without pulling the focus from their discussion as MJ maneuvers the villain turned director to her way of thinking.

Final Thoughts

The Amazing Mary Jane #1 (Williams, Gomez, Lopez) is a fun opening look on an overdue story. Williams does a great job crafting dialogue that showcases different sides of MJ: confidence, compassion, humor, with the artwork providing solid support. The first issues show that with this creative team Mary Jane has the star power to headline her own comic; and leaves me interested in seeing more.
