Recap

Just when things seem like clear sailing for the Mysterio biopic, the Savage Six attack. Mary Jane Watson and Mysterio are the only things standing between the cast and crew and the six villains. Can Mary Jane save their now low budget indie flick from another premature ending?

Review

The pacing of this issue seemed odd to me. It starts with the action of the Savage Six, where Leah Williams does a great job showing off Mary Jane’s fearlessness and resourcefulness. As much as a part of me wanted Mary Jane to take down some baddies (she has done it before), her role in evacuating the cast and crew made far more sense. It also allows for hints of heroic behavior in Mysterio. Unfortunately, after the action scene, the return to Mary Jane as the resident problem-solver felt anticlimactic. Despite this, Williams continues to draw me into the characters in unexpected ways.

The art team of Carlos Gomez and Lucas Werneck and color by Carlos Lopez continue to be a perfect fit for the slice of life aspects of the series. The facial expressions endear the characters and keep me engaged when action is light. However, the action scenes feel inconsistent, with some panels losing the tension.

Final Thoughts

The Amazing Mary Jane #3 (Williams, Gomez, Werneck, and Lopez) is an overall good comic. No one aspect has blown me away. However, I also can’t find much reason to complain. It does, however, continue to keep my interest and curiosity as to what is to be coming next.
