Review

This issue was really solid on all the points it needed to be. Strong writing, strong art, nice flow, etc. If I had a magic wand, I’d only change a couple of things. I would add more action, and I would brighten up the book a little. Not emotionally, I mean litterally. To me, the colors seemed a little bit muted when they should’ve been really strong and crisp. As you’ll come to find out, I’m a guy that likes my comic books to be comic booky, and Spidey’s a guy who really shines when his colors pop. But, those two “complaints” are really minor.

You get some nice interactions with Peter and MJ, Peter and Aunt May and Peter and his sister, who leads him away from the ONE place on Earth that he really should be, and the more you read the more you realize that Peter’s bargaining with himself, which is going to get him in some hot water. We do see a little action with him and a group of Marvel mainstays, and a tease from a classic Spider-Man villain, with a promise of conflict coming a little down the line.

The rest of this issue is really interesting. Its focus is mainly on Peter and his supporting cast, and some storylines are put into motion that will, I’m sure,  have major payoffs down the road, but I really hope it’s not anytime soon. As you read the panels just before the last, you get a sense of how the book’s gonna end, and you’re almost sure that Spencer’s going to throw you for a swerve, but when he doesn’t, it’s even more heart-wrenching than you’d expect. I have a feeling the ending of this issue is going to spark a lot of debate amongst fans, and that’s how you know a creative team is doing their job.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed this issue. Spencer and Manna are firing on all cylinders. They know the exact emotional beats to hit, and how to hit them hard, When you put this book down, you're definitely not going to feel the same the rest of the day.
