Amazing Spider-Man #60
There should be a word for comics that don’t have a ton of action, but they contain a lot of action. Like, I don’t think anyone throws a punch in this issue, but the issue moves the narrative more than it’s moved in the last six months. And PLEASE, for the love of God, don’t go dicking around on the internet because this one’s gonna get spoiled fast and hard. There’s no way to put the genie back in this bottle, kids. Mostly a piece about Peter’s feelings (not kidding) author Nick Spencer makes you really feel for Peter as he comes to grips with the s***storm that his life has been for the last 60 years (almost 7 months in comic book time).
I know, I know, it’s been done before, but honestly, I don’t recall it being done on this level before. Spencer’s really got command of the characters in this book, and it shows on many levels. Not just Peter, but MJ as well. She’s the other main character in this issue, and like most times, she’s standing by her man. Unlike past issues, there’s WAY more to her than meets the eye. For the record, no, she’s not a Transformer.
Do you know how Warner Brothers Animation does those different DC movies in the style of the artist that actually did the comic story? Darwyn Cooke, Ed McGuiness, Frank Miller, etc.? I would love for Marvel to adapt that same thing for some of their own animated movies. I mean, how cool would it be to see a Spidey movie on Disney+ done in the style of Mark Bagley? By the way, he’s the artist on this issue and he’s really awesome, but that’s no surprise. What is a surprise is how he makes an issue that’s 99% talking NOT coma-inducing. Artists who are looking to break into comics should buy this book, just to have for reference. Not of anatomy, but for layouts and visual storytelling.
This is comics done right.
I'm really hoping that Spencer and Bagley continue this run for a long, long time. They play very well off each other, and the true winner is the reader!!
