The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1: A New Old Story

This was a pretty fun annual one-shot featuring a familiar story told from a new point of view. It is a little bit out of place at this point but far from unwelcome, I’d prefer an annual one shot to the filler issues that are so common these days. Not that this story won’t likely be used to add new material to some upcoming black suit saga reprints or something. All in all I’d call this worth reading if you’re a fan of the era, but hardly can’t miss. Saladin Ahmed has done a good job portraying the mid to late eighties era of Spider-man, which I’m greatly familiar with, love the Mcfarlane/ Larsen era of Spidey.

The art by Garry Brown was pretty good although I do wish they’d gotten someone with a more Mcfarlane esque style. He does an excellent job of replicating some key moments but his overall style is quite a bit more sketchy. Stylistically it’s totally fine and wouldn’t bother me a second if it wasn’t an era I know so well. I did enjoy the obvious Reed Richards cameo, he’s the one that got the black spidey suit off, I predict lots of Reed cameos now that he’s back.
