Review

Writer Nick Spencer’s run on Spider-Man is coming to a close and boy, does he want to go out with a bang, and I have a feeling this be more of a nuclear explosion than a simple bang. This first issue is pretty packed, and considering Spencer’s time with this title, that’s saying something. Spencer makes sure that this isn’t one of those mini-series that is easily forgotten about and ignored that you end up getting at a crappy Half-Priced Books for like $2.

Nope, this one’s gonna stick and stay.

I shouldn’t have been surprised at the things that come to light in this series, but I still was. Lots of good story, dialogue that stays true to the characters and an extra dose of surprises make this issue an incredibly good read.

Even if you’re not a fan of artist Mark Bagley, your jaw is still gonna be on the floor. If you are, have some smelling salts around cause you might pass out. His storytelling ability is second to none, and that’s just fact, not hype. There’s a lot to draw in this issue and Bagley hits a home run on every level, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention his team of inkers. John Dell, Andy Owens, and Andrew Hennesy all eclipse 90% of other inkers working today.

I loved every aspect of this book, the story, the art, the colors by Brian Reber, and Joe Caramagna’s letters (which were fueled 100% by Krispy Kreme donuts). You’re gonna be very hard-pressed to find a better comic out this week.

Final Thoughts

Pretty much perfect summer reading. This reminds me of the summer Spider-Man events when I was a kid like Round Robin and others. And with this series rapids release schedule, you won't have to wait long between issues!!
