THE APPROACH #1
Recap
It’s just a storm, right? Right?
Review
Jeremy Haun and Jason Hurley’s latest offering, The Approach, is equal parts Frank Marshall and John Carpenter. The story burns slow like a good incense while exercising your mind to prepare for a jump scare or the big reveal. The story starts with Mac, a weathered firefighter who prepares to battle this tremendous storm that folks haven’t seen for some time. Upon his arrival at the airport, we are introduced to Abigail, his coworker, and fellow firefighter. The delightful slow burn continues as more characters are introduced; the pace really sets in and provides a creepy undertone that will no doubt be ever-present as the series goes on. As the story plays out, we are reminded of how Haun and Hurley operate, and by the end of the book, all you can do is nod your head in approval, let out an approving sigh, and say, “they did it again!”
I referenced Frank Marshall and John Carpenter earlier because the book gives off huge vibes of those giants of the industry. The world feels lived in. From Mac’s morning grumblings to Abigail’s naiveness and to the airport that is housing an unsuspected flight with passengers, you get the feeling that you’ve been to this town and talked to its people. The Approach would be a perfect silent book. Jesus Hervas, Lea Caballero, Brett Weldele, and Ed Dukeshire shine like the Northern Lights to wrap up this horror series in a perfect body horror bow. Facial expressions, struggles, and blood all come together and jump from the panels. Even when the plane arrives and the passengers are entering the airport, trying to get a feel for what’s going on, the art and layout really add great detail to a solid story and first issue.
Final Thoughts
If execution is the key to good storytelling, then this team has the keys to the entire damn neighborhood. A solid first issue with all of the components that you look for in a comic and fascinating storytelling.
