The Army Of Darkness 1979 #1: “I Am Not In 2021 Anymore”

This is my first real reading of an Army of Darkness comic.  All I can say is that it is definitely different and I liked it.  Barnes really gives Ash his voice.  He is exactly how I picture him to be.  He is snarky and his reaction is basically “this again?”

The art here is graphic and it fits the story very well.  This is a horror comic and the gore and violence is appropriate for this genre.  Most of the gore is of a supernatural variety anyway and it does not distract from the story, on the contrary it enhances the story and creates a real feeling of high stakes here.

I also like the cartoony look of the art.  Again it is appropriate, this is a fantastical story involving time travel demons and magic and it needs to be cartoony in order to portray the subject matter.

The story here is just a set up.  Ash is trying to get a job which I find numerous in that he goes to his job interview with his shotgun strapped to his back and his chainsaw hand as if that is completely normal which for him and his world it is.  The only complaint I see is that his gun does mysteriously appear on his back when he goes to demonstrate his chainsaw which makes me wonder where it might have been while he was in Richardson’s office.

I do find it fascinating and Ash agrees with me when I say that he seems to take on the dialect of the time and area he is in.  He quickly identifies the time as the 70’s and immediately recognizes that he is talking like he was from a nod in the 70’s.  Is this normal for these stories.  That is some research that I look forward to doing.
