Recap

The Winslow House is in shambles, but people call it home. It is a place for people who have almost nothing but are trying to make a life for themselves. It is also in a bad neighborhood, and no one will stop criminals from tormenting the residents...until The Death-Defying 'Devil shows up!

But when the 'Devil tries to step in and protect the innocent, things take a turn for the worse and he finds himself trapped inside the house, being taken care of by the same people he was trying to save.

Review

I liked all about the art in this story, but the cover art and variant covers are just fantastic. Each variant is a work of art in its own right with the colors and the details, as each highlights a pose of the main character in this story, really catching the attention of the reader to lure them into the beautiful interiors. It’s remarkable how the art shows the details in the residents of Winslow House, as each one is not a typical idealized human specimen if you will. We get an attractive but definitely elderly woman, a war vet who lost a limb and an eye, a pregnant woman, her goth like little sister, to name a few. Each character is given a personality that draws the reader into the story.

The story is a little confusing but that is what makes the writing effective here. What begins as a possible superhero story morphs into a supernatural battle with Satan himself for the life of a little girl. Each vignette with a resident of the house takes on a story of its own as Bart Hill, the mysterious protagonists, learns more about himself as he visits each neighbor. The different story genres also leads to a great read, as we move from a western movie shoot to a sword and sandals epic adventure in the frozen mountains. The backgrounds are very detailed and I as the reader felt like I was really in the environment I was visualizing, shifting naturally from one location to another.

We really get to know the characters some more than others but all are touched on.  We feel with Louisa as she lives with her age and her real desire to be a famous actress. We feel for Roberto and Yolanda Flores as they want to leave Winslow House and start a family. We feel the heartbreak of Edwin as he remembers his wife and sons her were so tragically taken from him at different times. The final offer of Satan is very tempting for each of the characters and we truly fear that one of them may betray Bart as Satan wants.

Final Thoughts

What starts out as a tale of a vigilante versus and gang of street thugs becomes a supernatural story of Satan and his demons versus a man who cannot die. The story is truly thought provoking and a great character study as we examine what people really want and will they or won’t they do anything for their dreams and desires.
