The Devil That Wears My Face #1 (Advance Spoiler-free Review)

It’s 1740 and the Vatican is divided. The clergy and their belief is teetering; when you doubt your belief, the devil seems to be the first to offer solace. Possession is a terrifying concept. One that goes back to the beginning of time. In that time it has taken on many forms from religious taboo to entertainment. It’s one of my favorite horror tropes; I mean, who doesn’t love a good exorcism?! Apparently, the folks at Mad Cave do because they have unleashed David Pepose and Alex Cormack upon the world for The Devil That Wears My Face.

Horror needs to have a balance of visuals and trepidation. As that uneasiness creeps up the back of your neck, you look around the room to make sure no one else is there. Good horror puts the thought into your head, “What if this happened to me?” That’s when you know you it’s f*cking good. The Devil That Wears My Face is f*cking good! From the first panel to the last, Alex Cormack takes this beloved trope and turns it into a visual amusement park of fear. Cormack’s depiction of the demon known as Legion is something to behold. Two things that stand as some of my favorite parts about the book are the eyes (you’ll understand once you read it) and about 3 pages in, you get an absolute poster treatment of phenomenal gore. Dark and gritty colors set the tone nicely for Pepose as he comes in and starts the psychological beating. David Pepose is one of those writers who grabs you and pulls you in, makes you a part of the story. Now when you marry Pepose’s style with horror, strap in for one helluva ride. While there are numerous gory parts in the book, Pepose beautifully balances the recipe with characters you can get behind and a plot rich with sustenance. If you are already a fan of David Pepose or Alex Cormack then you already know what you’re in store for. If you are new to their work, then I can’t recommend The Devil That Wears My Face enough.
