Recap

When Wan, the mysterious algorithm, assumes control of the Dreaming, it is up to Matthew the Raven to get to the bottom of things. No one knows for sure what Wan is capable of, and residents of the Dreaming are learning that maybe they aren’t needed at all. Matthew can feel that something is wrong but it isn’t until a visit with Cain that Matthew can truly see.

Review

All of the series in the new Sandman Universe have big boots to fill and so far they are living up to the name. I have been reading The Dreaming since it began last year and have constantly been blown away by the series. Spurrier is a master of his craft and Evely and Lopes seem to be a match made in heaven. The three are a dream team so it is only appropriate that they work on The Dreaming. Evely and Lopes are two of the most talented artists working today. They somehow capture the magic of Dreaming while exploring its dark corners without missing a beat. The panels of Matthew and Cain are some of the most gruesome images I’ve seen in awhile and this isn’t even a horror book.

The Dreaming #15 feels like it was written in 2019. Spurrier seems to be able to write contemporary without losing the charm of the source material. I have no doubt that he will work his magic on John Constantine: Hellblazer coming out this month. In a time where we can do practically anything with the touch of a finger and a screen, it is no surprise that the Dreaming would progress in a similar manner. When Wan digitizes the library, they are showing that the Dreaming we know is gone. This is not a good thing, though. For one, Lucien is out of a job. Secondly, if Wan can do everybody’s job more efficiently then why are they there?

Matthew has been my favorite character in the series since the inaugural Sandman Universe one-shot last year. Is it really up to him to save the Dreaming? His visit with Cain suggests he has some work to do. With Wan temporarily not able to see through Matthew’s eyes, it is time to get to work and find Abel.

Final Thoughts

Like Cain, I love a mystery and I am excited to see where the mystery leads Matthew and the reader. Knowing this creative team I know it will be worth the wait and an incredible ride. Whether you are new to the Sandman Universe or not, I think The Dreaming #15 is worth picking up at your local comic book shop or whatever way you get comics.
