Review

I was worried that The Dreaming #20 would wrap up its story in a hurried way, like kicking an ice cube under the fridge. This is because part of me did not want this run to end. The Dreaming,  so far, has consisted of twenty solid and enjoyable issues. Sandman Universe kicked off well over a year ago, and Daniel is finally back. Spurrier, Evely, and Lopes showed that an entire series could thrive and be driven by “minor” characters. What makes a great story is the storytelling.

This is evident when Dora and Lucien do not accept Daniel’s invitation to speak. They continue their stories. It felt really good to end with Lucien and his books. He spent twenty issues fighting to save his books, his life, and the Dreaming. Going back to my original point, The Dreaming #20 wrapped up the story beautifully. Daniel returns, evil is defeated, and the Dreaming is restored. The character growth of all of the characters shows that all of this was worth it.  I won’t go much more into detail, because it is such a beautiful issue to experience yourself.

Bilquis Evely and Mat Lopes are the stars of The Dreaming #20. The first five or so pages of the issue are splashes and spreads soaked in magnificent colors and intricate details. Evely and Lopes as a team have been the highlight of The Dreaming for me. In fact, if I had to sum up their work together in one word, it would be dreamy. DC could not have picked a better creative team to kick off The Dreaming. Luckily, I can still find Spurrier’s incredible writing in Hellblazer, among other books. I cannot wait to follow Evely and Lopes to their other projects. That being said, I am more than excited to see what G. Willow Wilson and Nick Robles have in store for the Dreaming!

Final Thoughts

The Dreaming #20 marks the end of an incredible run by an even more incredible creative team. Daniel is back and the Dreaming is restored in this gorgeous and exciting issue that lives up to the Sandman name!
