The Flash #35: The Future is HOT

The Flash #35 is the penultimate issue in the first six-issue story arc under writer Ryan North and artist Gavin Guidry. In the previous installment, Wally attempted to understand how his new Flash of Insight powers work, discovering that learning more about the world around him increased the accuracy of the power’s predictive abilities. However, he was left baffled when his prediction about the weather turned out to be incorrect, which led him into direct conflict with one of his classic Rogues, Heatwave. As this issue begins, Wally continues to explore these powers, using his encounter with Heatwave as a foundation for new possibilities regarding his future.

The writing style of this story arc is reminiscent of the early Fantastic Four comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, with many issues ending abruptly in the midst of action and the actual resolution occurring in the following installment. This is the case with Wally’s conflict with Heatwave: their confrontation began at the end of the last issue, only to be resolved in this one before Wally embarks on the next phase of his adventure halfway through. This approach gives the arc a contained, seamless flow from one issue to the next. It also allows each issue to recap the previous events organically, making the monthly reading experience just as satisfying as reading the collected editions.

North and Guidry’s handling of the conflict between Heatwave and Wally is especially engaging, showcasing Wally’s distinctive method of dealing with his Rogues. Heatwave genuinely believes he is acting in good faith during his latest quest for quick wealth, serving in an archivist role rather than as a thief. Wally’s ability to quickly dismantle Heatwave’s distorted worldview is genuinely hilarious, yet it also highlights Wally’s heart of gold; he recognizes Heatwave’s attempt to be a better person and rewards him for it. This characterization is a standout feature of the series, making it a delight to read each week, and it’s wonderful to see it reflected in every issue.

The next segment of the story sees Wally demonstrating his new powers to Linda, showcasing his ability to partially glimpse into the future. While the outlook seems promising, there’s an underlying sense that trouble is looming. These powers are fantastic for Wally, but they risk making him too overpowered, especially if he were to use them in a team setting like the Titans or the Justice League. There must be some downside that will surface in the next issue, setting up intriguing stakes for the story moving forward.
