he community of Bedford, Colorado, is a sleepy small town. The people say hello to their neighbors, attend town hall meetings, and root for the local high school football team on Friday nights. But this idyllic small town is thrown upside down when the Nuclear Man arrives and starts… experimenting.
Firestorm has turned buildings to sand and people to glass with no remorse and no warning. But what exactly provoked Ronnie Raymond to commit this heinous act, and can anyone contain the fury that is Firestorm?
Review
The Fury Of Firestorm launches the second installment of the DC Next Level books that spotlights those characters in the DC Universe stable not found in the main line of books. Firestorm is one of those characters that is a perfect choice for this publishing initiative, and Jeff Lemire and Rafael DeLatorre hit the ground running with a number one issue that shows the character’s full potential, introducing the major characters, and establishing a story arc that will keep readers anxiously waiting for the second issue.
Lemire begins with introducing “Firestorm” with storytelling analogous to The Creation Story. Readers are shown the extent of Firestorm’s power set as he goes Dr. Manhattan on the town of Bedford, Colorado. In this sequence, Lemire throws some subtle hints that this may not be the Ronnie Raymond / Professor Stein incarnation, the dead giveaway being that Firestorm can transmute the citizens into glass (organic materials is one thing Firestorm is unable to manipulate).
Lemire also gives a brief and concise origin of this Level 10 metahuman, as DeLatorre provides the visuals of the various Firestorm incarnations. It was nice to see that Lorraine Reilly (Firehawk) is being used, given her association and history with Ronnie Raymond and being a superhero in her own right.
DeLatorre shows his skills as he uses different styles of art for the various story threads. The parts with “Firestorm” in Colorado, Lorraine’s thread, and Ronnie and Stein fighting as Firestorm all have a distinct look and feel that matches that part of the story.
It will be interesting to see where Lemire takes the story as it looks as though the Firestorm Matrix has become sentient and able to exist without Ronnie and Stein reigning in the Matrix abilities. It seems that Lemire is aiming towards a larger story showing how Ronnie and Stein make Firestorm the hero he is, and not just an omnipotent force of the DCU
Final Thoughts
The Fury Of Firestorm #1 is a great start to the series that looks to explore exactly what the Firestorm Matrix is and why the human elements of the hero are importanrt when it comes to wielding the godlike abilities of The Matrix and the true Fury Of Firestorm
