In 1969, seventeen-year-old Kathy Sartori was brutally attacked, her body hurled into Brooklyn's Sheepshead Bay. Miraculously, she survives and fights her way back to the surface, only to discover that fifty years have passed and an eerie doppelganger has lived out an entire life in her place. Kathy soon confronts not just this strange double, but the madman who ''murdered'' her five decades earlier. Will he, and the dark entity that lives inside him, hold the key to Kathy's missing years? Or will Kathy become a ghost of herself, forced to live out what remains of her life on the edge of the world that she desperately wants to be a part of?
Review
This was a fascinating and entertaining first issue written by the legendary J. M. DeMatteis with wonderful art by Corwin Howell.
The story follows a girl named Katherine Angela Santori, who gets murdered by the man of her dreams and thrown into a bay, only to wake up “the next day” and quickly find out that 50 years have passed. Near the start of the issue we are given a great feel of the world Katherine lived in, that of Brooklyn New York in April of 1969 before finds her in the same place but with things drastically changed. The mystery only builds from there as she tracts down the house her parents had moved to only to find that the woman now living there is herself, aged 50 years… As well as a full size painting of a green woman that seems to have a life of its own and plenty of eerie green mist.
The story is complimented by the lively art, which is especially wonderful on splash pages that are outstanding even without the context of the story. Yet, another level of life is brought to the pages by the colors which bring a real melancholy warmth to each panel.
This was a truly enjoyable first issue that built a good level of mystery with out becoming confusing and depicted it with plenty of soul and emotion.
Final Thoughts
This was an outstanding first issue to what is sure to be a great mystery with plenty of twists and emotion.
