Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp's Green Lantern series has begun, The guardians have appointed Hal Jordan chief investigator on a new case in what Grant Morrison described as a space police procedural series.

An antimatter being has escaped one form of captivity to arrive in another, and forces are conspiring to utilize him to make a weapon to annihilate the hated Green Lantern Corps, there is a traitor in the Corps threatening to destroy it all!

Review

I will start by saying that I am a Grant Morrison fan, people who are not might think this issue is a little dense. I love the street level feeling of the lanterns interactions with space criminals, if Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps was Star Wars, the series is Law and order, a slow deliberate burn as opposed to the frantic pacing of the previous 2 Green Lantern series as they wrapped up.

It does seem like a familiarity with silver age Green Lantern comics is helpful in understanding some of the concepts employed in this issue especially name dropped lanterns such as X-ray Lanterns, I guess I might have to dust off that Green Lantern silver age omnibus that has been sitting on the shelf for a month. To me that’s part of the appeal for Grant Morrison, I personally appreciate when a series rewards long-time readers or people who read back Issues, Morrison’s tight mind for continuity will surely come into play during this run as well which I’m very excited for a feel like continuity is thrown to the wayside far too often these days.

Generally speaking the art via Liam Sharp is fantastic, very detailed and dynamic, but there are some pages and panels particular page 24 Where it seems like his body proportions are off. Faces also seemed to go off-model in a couple places as well, but hardly damning issues. The panel layouts were insanely great as well, really amazing.

Also very worth of accolades are the colors by Steve Oliff, which really come into play in the opening scenes, which are beautifully rendered.

I did enjoy a few lettering elements from industry veteran Tom Orzechowski, including some custom font work, I might have liked more sound effects, but that’s not on the letterer.

Final Thoughts

I will definitely be reading this series going forward, it feels like a decent jumping on point for readers unfamiliar with concepts, as it may turn you onto some new facets of GL lore.
