The Green Lantern #5
Hal Jordan begins his initiation into The Blackstars with a slog through the Vampire Planet Vorr! As the planet tries to kill him he assembles the pieces of his new mantle, that of the Blackstars!
Grant Morrison’s phenomenal space cop drama continues as Hal goes into deep cover to find out Controller Mu’s plans, what must Hal sacrifice to gain their trust? That final page reveal blew my mind holy crap! The police drama dynamic really felt like it hit home this issue with the choice regarding the cliffhanger which was reminiscent of Serpico or The Departed, just so so great. I genuinely can’t wait to see what happens next!
Delightfully the first page had a delightful famous vampire Easter egg page (pictured above) featuring the likes of Lestat and Jemaine Clement from What We Do in the Shadows, just wanted to note it, love stuff like this!
The artwork by Liam Sharp is getting better by the issue it seems and in this issue is seriously can’t miss, with one of the later pages seriously depicting a pitch perfect Frank Frazetta Death Dealer (his birthday was last week I’m sure it was intentional but holy crap it’s good) just great. I also loved the moments seen from Hal’s point of view which were spectral triumphs on the part of colorist Steve Oliff.
I did want to note the lettering by Comic Watch letterer of the year Tom Orzechowski, I adore when alternate fonts are used for emphasis which is employed several times here, as are the ubiquitous bell tones. Also worth noting Tom hand letters, so all of those BOMG effects are hand drawn. Phenomenal.
A great entry in a great series.
