Recap

A wall of text greets intrigued fans following the cliffhanger for last issue of Grant Morrison's Green Lantern series. Enclosed within is a tale of a wizard living within Hal's ring, and a city built on sand that is always moving, and the witch girl Pengowirr. As Hal ventures deeper into Emerald Sands he realizes where he is and just like that it's over.

Review

An insanely dense issue that serves basically only as a vehicle to namedrop some silver age GL nonsense. I’m of two minds regarding this issue in that I’m annoyed that a seemingly big cliffhanger that was going somewhere ended up not even being a full issue of plot, but at the same time thank goodness we aren’t getting more than half an issue of this trudging, dense narration. it would have been better and more interesting had we not been told last issue and on the cover that Hal is inside his ring, obviously a twist like that could be considered cheap but it at least would’ve provided a hook, instead this issue just falls flat.

The art by Liam Sharp is excellent as per usual, with Liam taking up coloring this issue as well as pencils and inks, he really excels in issues like this one, lots of monsters and weirdness. I wanted to point out the panel layouts, they have a definite and intentional look to them and I bet that if I tore all the pages out they would make the map we see towards the end, that is COOL. One thing that makes the wall of text a bit more tolerable is the return of series letterer Tom Orzechowski who took a couple issues off for whatever reason.

Final Thoughts

A very skippable issue that ends up going nowhere by the end, great visuals though. I'm sure this series will turn around but I did not like this issue it steps too far from the police procedural in space we were promised.
