The Green Lantern Season 2 #2: “The Hobgoblin of the Semiarticulate”

True to form, Morrison’s take on Green Lantern is wonderfully strange and full of history. In Season 2, Hal is assigned to Earth by the new Guardians and in this first mission on Earth, Hal links up (in more ways than one) with Eve Doremus, a character from early in Hal’s run, created by Gardner Fox and Gil Kane and rarely seen since. Much of the dialogue in this issue borders on nonsensical (which the book itself points out numerous times) while at other times, it becomes frighteningly clear as Morrision uses Hal as a vehical to promote peaceful resolution over war.

The visuals from Sharp are as terrifying as ever. The pairing of Sharp and Morrison continues to be a genius decision as Sharp proves time and again that whatever strangeness Morrison can dream up– and he’s the king of dreaming up strange– Liam Sharp can bring it to life on the page with his dynamic layouts and meticulous attention to detail. The primary “villain” in this issue, Rakaww, has numerous moments where he visually is reminiscent of The Violator from Spawn, perhaps a nod to the book’s legendary letterer, Tom Orzechowski.
