Review

The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #11 takes things up a notch with a sci-fi filled, action-packed issue that finds Ms. Marvel face to face with the worst version of herself at the worst possible time.

Remember the super awesome new Kree technology suit that Kamala got earlier in the series (around issue #5)? Well it’s come back to haunt her, quite literally. Now authorized to eliminate targets as “Stormranger”, Kamala’s old suit is intent on wreaking havoc on her already troubled life. While this sets up a lot of tense drama, the issue instead focuses on the fast-paced action sequences of their fight resulting in a rather quick issue.

After the previous issue’s almost distracted nature, it was nice to see the series pick up on a narrative thread that had been introduced months ago. It’s the worst time something like this could ever happen to Kamala, which makes it the best time to show up in the series. Stormranger proves to be just the jolt the series needs amidst the heavy drama surrounding Kamala’s family.

There isn’t much that can be said about the visuals of this issue that haven’t been said on the past ones. This creative team is consistent with every issue, making sure they are all an absolute treat to look at. Special mention to the colors from Ian Herring which helped to both sell the sci-fi aesthetic and make this issue feel different but still just familiar enough.

While I would have liked to see the drama around Kamala’s life impact her conflict with Stormranger just a little bit more aside from the passing thoughts, this is ultimately such a fast paced issue that it works well. It’s not the most complex, nor is it all that new reader friendly, but it continues a uniquely strong overarching story that fans of Ms. Marvel will certainly be excited about.

The ongoing saga of the Magnificent Ms. Marvel has been relatable and emotional, but who would have thought such a sci-fi twist would feel so natural? Be sure to catch up on the series today and don’t miss issue #11 for an intense Ms. Marvel versus Ms. Marvel(ish) fight!
