Review

What an eventful issue! The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #9 holds nothing back in throwing one overwhelming moment after another at Kamala, but there seems to be one good thing amidst all the chaos. Spoiler alert…

Kamala and Bruno KISSED!

Excuse me while I fanboy out for a minute.

It’s moments like that that turn a series from good to great. This issue is packed full of deeply emotional events that tug at your heart in so many different ways. The decline of Kamala’s father’s health has been looming over nearly everything that’s happened recently and the turn for the worst is heart wrenching. Luckily, Kamala isn’t alone when dealing with this.

The surrounding cast of characters really steal the spotlight in The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #9, from Bruno to Doctor Strange, we see the larger Marvel universe coming together around Kamala in her time of need. But nothing is ever easy right? The appearance of Mr. Hyde turns things sour forcing Ms. Marvel into action despite going through such a rough time. Writer Saladin Ahmed has a keen understanding of when to insert these punch ’em up sequences to emphasize the emotions our hero is experiencing right now.

It might seem like the absolute worst time ever for Kamala to be dealing with some rampaging jerk, but it turns out, its actually a moment of clarity for her. The kiss with Bruno comes in the heat of the moment but it’s this dynamic shift that punctuates the recent traumatic events. It’s really solid storytelling that feels like it’s only getting better!

The artwork might not be the most stunning on the shelves today, but it does exactly what it needs to when the story demands it. It’s a great example of how to add to a story without taking anything away from it. There is a feeling of great chemistry with this creative team, where they are able to pull off almost anything. It’s really enjoyable as a reader.

The best thing about The Magnificent Ms. Marvel #9 is that it left me incredibly excited for the next issue. Big things are happening and I just didn’t want this issue to end when it did. What more could you ask for, really?
