Recap

The Omega Book is a sci-fi thriller that puts a scientist in a position where he must now save the world from the thing he created. The rub is that the only person he can trust to help him is his son who he is estranged from. We pick up in issue three with a crime, a dangerous adventure, and a revelation for the father and son.

Review

The art is so beautiful for this comic. Every page reminds me of a cut scene from a triple-A video game. The detail of each scene and character is perfect; I also like how the backgrounds come off psychedelic. But they are not just trippy to be trippy; the scenes fit each moment the writer wants to convey what the person on the page is going through. I love how in one scene, one of the main characters is in shock, and you can see through his jaw and teeth that are translucent. I truly believe this is just someone being a master at their craft and making every panel feel special and important.

Every panel is important in this story. We learn about the Omega Book and the dangers that is possess. We start the issue out with us seeing someone use some of the powers of the book for their own selfish nature. I like this! Very rarely do we get to see upfront what the danger is. Usually, we hear the entire story about the threat and why we should be afraid. Then we get to the third act, and we see it, and at that point I am usually like “That’s the danger? Okay, I guess.”

But in this book, we get up close and personal with it, from the start of the book to the end. Now some people may not like the hand-holding nature of this issue because it is giving you a lot out of the gate. I like it though because now I see the stakes and how important this story is, but more importantly, I wonder how the protagonist will be able to make it work when it seems like no one wins in this situation. And sometimes that’s how it is. There are no winners; maybe it is a tie, or both sides lose because there is no good option. Because of the nature of the medium we are talking about. You can write a story and make sure all parties’ points have been made, but still nothing seems to change, which is how life is.

Final Thoughts

This issue is strong. We have a ton of answers coming out of it. You may not like the answers, but I do think the creators are not going in the typical direction with this story. I am already seeing things that escape the normal tropes, and it looks like they are going to explore their own path.
