The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #6

Recap
The ancient witch known as the Thessalian has survived millennia of human atrocity via her cunning and remorselessness. But for the last 30 years, she’s endured her greatest challenge yet: Los Angeles. Thessaly needs a change. A big one. And when she learns of the opportunity presented by the Corinthian’s reappearance, may the old gods help anyone in her way! The horizons of the Nightmare Country open up in this standalone issue, as our tale grows ever larger and stranger…
Review
With the success of The Sandman on Netflix and the surge of new readers to original volumes of The Sandman, right now is a great time to be a fan. With The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #6, James Tynion IV continues to show that he is a great fit for the beloved series. What is impressive is that Tynion’s writing in Nightmare Country fits so well with everything that came before but his tone and voice are still present and strong. Bringing Thessaly into the mix is a welcomed addition. Readers were first introduced to Thessaly in The Sandman: A Game of You, issues 32-37 of the original series. We may even see an adaptation of said issues if we are lucky enough to get a season two of the show. Maria Llovet does it all in this issue art-wise. Their style is fun and a great fit for the series. I would love to see this creative team continue into the next arc
In the wake of the events of issue #5, we meet writer Jamie, who has just been hired to write a treatment on Maddie’s death from the previous arc. Things get interesting when Jamie meets Thessaly, who says Jamie can get some interesting insight into Maddie’s death, but unfortunately didn’t live to write the script for a movie adapting her death. What we do get is some spectacular and spooky panels. We also get a successful bridge into the next arc. The ritual gives readers a quick recap to get new readers up to speed, including a brief look at Corinthian through Jamie’s visions. This is also enough information for Thessaly to move forward with whatever she is planning. With the promise that she will return in The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives #1 in December, I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next. Between Dead Boy Detectives and Nightmare Country, the Sandman Universe is in a great place for readers.
Final Thoughts
THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE: NIGHTMARE COUNTRY #6 is spooky fun and acts as a successful bridge into the next arc and possibly into another series.
