Review
The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country – The Glass House has consistently been some of the best Sandman to come out of the current The Sandman Universe. Each issue has delivered the intricate storytelling and stunning visuals that you’d expect out of a Sandman book. James Tynion IV’s work with The Sandman Universe has felt like it’s building to something since the beginning and it has luckily been given the time and space it needs. Much of The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country – The Glass House #6 dealt with Dream’s interference and then insistence that the matter is closed, and with another writer, this might have felt too handwavey as a conclusion but Tynion has skillfully used Dream to show that something big is coming. As a nice little bonus, this is confirmed at the end of the issue with a nice little “The Nightmare Country saga will conclude in 2024!”
The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country – The Glass House #6 features some of the best art of the series with Lisandro Estherren providing some incredible visuals complimented by Patricio Delpeche’s equally entrancing colors. Much of Sandman deals with physical representations of impossible concepts like Dream or a nightmare, and the series has historically knocked it out of the park and this series has been no different. What works so well in this issue is that Dream’s segments push the boundaries for what readers have been used to. Estherren and Delpeche take big swings with this issue and it completely pays off and really leans into the idea that Dream is intervening for a reason that the characters and readers can’t know just yet.
Final Thoughts
The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country - The Glass House #6 ties things up nicely so the series feels complete but it has laid the tracks for what comes next. Tynion’s pacing of the series has been fantastic and the inclusion of Dream in this issue was handled incredibly effectively. Lisandro Estherren and Patricio Delpeche delivered some of their best work of the series in this issue and continue to produce work that you just don’t see a lot from DC anymore.
