THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE WAR ON WEED #1: It’s 4/20, Here’s a Comic About Weed

So there I was, freshly ground kush, the bowl is packed and at the ready. Warzone’s Judgement Day is playing, Raybeez’s familiar voice and message are as clear now as it was back then: 

I’ve had it with everyone’s lies

Always trying to tear out my insides

Need to put me down to bring yourself up

Man, that’s so fucked up

I usually take turns on hardcore or jam bands when smoking. If you’ve never started a session with Youth of Today’s Break Down The Walls and then eased into a super crisp bootleg of Phish’s Clifford Ball, then you are missing out. [Inside voice is now telling me that smoking before writing this review was a bad idea.] The biggest reason that I’m listening to the harder stuff is that, if Brian Posehn knew that this review was written on awful hippie music, he won’t retweet my review and B.P. is a pretty cool dude! BTW, I’m still listening to Warzone!

WEED! We love it, we grow it, we smoke it! It’s not a gateway drug. If anything, it’s a gateway to bigger pants because we can’t keep our hands out of the Doritos bag! It makes my green heart happy to know there is a generation that will grow up thinking weed comes from the store down the road. However, it wasn’t always like that. For generations, marijuana has been looked at as a life-altering evil drug. The last time I checked it was called Alcoholics Anonymous, but that’s for a different story about different lobbyists. What we are here to talk about is a 4/20 offering so crusty and so fresh, it makes the summer crowds at a Phish show look like they’re new to the tour (sorry Brian P, I just couldn’t help it.). 

We’re talking about The Secret History On The War On Weed! Written by Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn, art by Scott Koblish, colors by Hi-Fi (“High”-Fi), and letters by Clayton Cowles (Clayton, do you ever sleep?). The book hits with the same force as a Reagan-era economic package. It’s everything you need this book to be. It has muscles, corrupt politicians, Eighties cheese, and the right mix of bringing home a message while having a tremendous amount of fun. Scotch McTiernan is every bit John Rambo mixed with John Matrix, this is until he grabbed ahold of the devil’s lettuce and felt what millions upon millions of people have been feeling since the dawn of time. He got high. He got really f*cking high and started kicking ass for the right side.
