Review

The Sensational She-Hulk #1 is an enjoyable premiere issue filled with laughs, petty squabbles, and romance everywhere you look. Fans of the characters will be happy to see this character leading the lighter side of the Marvel Universe.

The issue kicks off with She-Hulk and Jack (a radioactive powered super human) having a romantic moment before his powers remind them why their “relationship” is a complicated situation. It’s a brief moment but a major theme of the issue overall.

Written by Rainbow Rowell, the story has charming moments and makes use of the host of Marvel characters available to incorporate in the story. We see personal problems between teams, dramas in after work clubs, and who’s dating who from a range of heroes and villains (er, ex-villains?). The humor is solid and I found myself chuckling throughout the 20 pages of story.  One aspect that impacts the issue is the sheer amount of chaotic energy throughout the story. Granted, Jen Walters is a lawyer so it’s expected to have all sorts of drama but so much happens so fast it can make for a high paced read.

Luckily, the art is done well which visually gives readers a moment to laugh at what’s happening and see small details. Drawn by Andres Genolet with colors by Dee Cunniffe, there are plenty of panels to take a moment and appreciate what is happening in the story. One aspect that I appreciate is how well they keep the scaling of She-Hulk. As a taller character, scaling is critical and they always highlight just how tall she is.

In addition to the main story, the back up from show writer Jessica Gao was a nice addition to the experience. For me personally, what makes a good use of a character like She-Hulk is focusing on humorous situations that showcase more of the hero. The back up story does this as Luis, a college student, follows She-Hulk as she goes about her day of being a hero. Complete with his own bright helmet and bullet proof vest, he experiences goblin bombs, destruction, and a range of other wild situations.

Final Thoughts

For fans who were following this creative team, they will likely find more of what they enjoyed beforehand. Anyone jumping into this series might be a bit lost, but it’s easy to fill in the gaps and enjoy the gags.
