As the battle between Levi and Jacob comes to a head, the future of the Green—and so of all living things—is embroiled in existential conflict. And there are those who have learned to look for windows of opportunity in conflict. The true nature of Prescot's machinations will become apparent even as their actions will put into question the very nature of the world we live in.
Review
First of all, can we all get excited about the fact that V’s run has been extended by 6 more issues?! With issue 11 coming out in March 2022, everyone will have a change to get caught up, with the last 10 issues, and ready for the adventures V has set out for us! I for one could not be more excited for a more deserving team to get this chance to expand on its rich storyline!
Now, issue #10. What an issue to end the year with! Possibly V’s best writing in this run so far, it does a beautiful job of showing Levi’s relationship with his brother, and you really get a sense of what it is that is the driving force behind his determination and resilience in the face of all he has faced so far. It is perhaps what I love about what the team behind this run had created. While it is a comic which could be categorized under horror and/or superhero, it is, in the end, a deeply moving story about a man and his relationships with his father and his bother. It is about a man how finds himself isolated from his family, yet it is clear that he has a deep, deep love for them, and perhaps a tiny bit of hope that things will get better, at it is that which carries him through this journey.
V also did a great job of maintaining the legacy of the Swamp Thing, tying Levi to all who came before him offers a glimmer of hope, a sense of belonging, a beautiful sense of purpose, one will pulls you out of the despair you may feel, and assures you that all is not lost.
The artwork in this issue is amazing, as always. I probably sound like a broken record by now, but every time I open a new issue, I am excited to see what Perkins has in store for us. My favourite pages are the ones right at the very beginning, with Levi and Jacob as kids, full of hope and innocence, untouched by the worries of the world. They pulled me in and made me nostalgic about my own childhood.
Spicer’s colouring, as always, was stunning. Rich oranges, the contrast between the pinks and greens, the icy blues, all make for a truly striking issue, one which wastes no time in fully immersing you in the story.
Final Thoughts
Ram V’s 10th issue of The Swamp Thing offers a sense of hope in an otherwise bleak world. It promises a future for The Green, and I am looking forward to watch it all unravel in the coming issues.
